You can plan to avoid this situation with some simple prentative maintenance. It’s better to pay less for maintenance than to pay more for repairs.

Have your system inspected by a professional heating and cooling specialist at the start of the cooling season. They will check to make sure it is draining properly and not leaking. If too much water is escaping or remaining in the system, your unit will not be running at full efficiency. Your inspector should also check for leaks and cracks in the hose and check to see if the condensate tube is draining properly.

You should change your system’s filters every 4-6 weeks when the unit is running. This removes the strain a dirty filter can put on the system. Your technician can also tell you how efficient your system is when they perform the service.

If your system needs to be repaired or replaced, Seven Oil can answer your questions. Our professionals will help you determine what kind of system would best suit your home and cooling needs.

Here are a few of the benefits of using heating oil to keep your home warm:

Oil heat warms your home quickly – The flame in an oil heater burns 300 degrees hotter than natural gas. This heats your home and water faster than any other heating source available. This means you won’t have to wait long to feel warm after turning on your heat.

Oil heat is more efficient – A modern oil heater works at 85-95% efficiency. So, for every dollar spent on heating oil, you get 85-95 cents of heat and hot water. Oil heat is more efficient than gas. This helps to keep oil heat an economical choice. The price of oil heat has remained virtually the same relative to inflation for many decades.

Oil heat is safe – Heating oil is non-explosive and doesn’t burn in a liquid state. If you drop a lit match into liquid heating oil, it will go out. Carbon monoxide leaks rarely happen without visible warnings. Smoke or soot are a sign that a system needs service.

Heating Oil burns cleaner today – Compared to 1970, today’s heating oil is 95% cleaner. An up-to-date heater produces no soot, dirt or odors in the home. Consumers use 6 billion fewer gallons of heating oil per year than they did in 1970 due to the increased efficiency of oil heat systems.

No supply scarcity – Heating oil is a popular fuel choice and is always available for purchase.

Here are some low cost ways to help stay warm this winter:

Seal drafts around your home using caulk and weather-stripping. Test for drafts by lighting an incense stick and holding it up to joints to see where the smoke wavers, this is where you have an air leak. Put cloth draft “snakes” along the bottom of exterior doors. Proper sealing can cut heat loss from 5%-30% according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy.

Lower your thermostat by a degree or two. A small change in temperature can save you cash on your heating bill. Use warm clothing and blankets to keep warm instead of turning up the heat.

Use a programmable thermostat to time your heat. Automatic adjustments to lower your home’s temperature when you are away or asleep will reduce your energy bill significantly. Programmable thermostats cost as little as $50 and are fairly easy to install.

Take care of your heating system. An annual professional inspection and cleaning of your heating system, whether oil, gas or electric, will help your system run more efficiently and keep working when it is cold outside. Also, remember to change any filters regularly.

Keep your heating vents unobstructed. Don’t place furniture or objects in front of vents and radiators and remember to vacuum dust away frequently.
